Because of their dual nature, it’s often quite difficult for a given dungeon to rank highly in both of those ways. ![]() Dungeons are frequently judged in two ways: how difficult they are, and how “fun” they are when frequently repeated. In a general sense, I would say dungeon design has been a mixed bag in Heavensward, but given that dungeons are fulfilling two different roles (leveling content and core repetition content for endgame), I suppose that’s not surprising. Most players, from the fairly casual non-raider to the dedicated end-game player will end up running a lot of dungeons over the course of their time in the game, and so it’s pretty important that they be strong content in a variety of ways. They’re one of the better ways to level (though the Deep Dungeon now rivals them, at least in speed run groups), frequently required for the Main Scenario, and the main “delivery vehicle” for end-game Tomestone currencies. It’s pretty difficult to progress in FFXIV without doing dungeons at least some of the time. For today, I’m going to be talking about Heavensward’s dungeons, both as individual pieces of content and in their role as one of the game’s central pillars. ![]() So far, I’ve talked about Anima Weapons, the Diadem, and the Main Scenario (spoilers!). Sporadically over the next couple of months I’m going to collect some of my thoughts on various legs of the game. As Final Fantasy XIV’s first major expansion, Heavensward had a lot to live up to, and carried a pretty heavy burden, as far as solidifying the game’s foundation for the future goes, and now that it’s nearly over, I’ve been thinking a lot about what the expansion did well and what it didn’t.

![]() A storage ottoman can provide similar hiding spots while also offering somewhere to sit to put on your shoes. A side table for dropping keys and bags, for instance, could have a cabinet for stowing away shoes, shopping bags, or pet essentials. ![]() You can easily hide essential entryway clutter by ensuring you have useful, multi-functional storage pieces built into the space. A minimalist entryway should instead focus on reducing all clutter, taking away some unessential decor that may get in the way of flowing through the space, and using pared-back color palettes for a clean, relaxing look. Having furniture doesn't mean that space is not minimalist – the trick is to pick pieces that serve a purpose and are multifunctional when possible to pare the space back to its bare essentials, not empty it completely. When creating a practical minimalist entryway, it is important to still have the essential furniture for storing shoes and other clutter, somewhere to hang or store coats, and a place to sit. In her career as a user experience designer, she learned to study people’s needs, and solve for them by designing thoroughly enjoyable experiences. Kristen Connor, has been a professional designer for over 20 years. ‘Those surfaces are needed for people to place their things as they enter.’ ‘Just avoid using too much space on any flat surfaces (like the top of a console table) for extraneous decor items, like picture frames and tabletop sculptures,’ she adds. A beautiful, compact plant or a narrow vase of fresh flowers make a wonderful first impression while making your entryway smell nice, as does a thoughtful piece of wall art that takes up very little space, a decorative bowl that can corral keys while looking nice. ‘This room sets the tone for their visit to your home. That being said, there is some scope for functional decor that can help to liven your entryway up, she adds. Not using entryway decor may seem counterintuitive if you are trying to create an inviting entryway while also keeping it minimal, but unnecessary design pieces that add little functionality are the enemy of the pared-back space, reminds Kristen Conner, interior designer and founder of Little Farm Interior Design. Norine Pennachia ex-interior designer and current owner of touchGOODS home furnishings reiterates that ‘versatility is essential for small spaces.’ She reminds us to think about picking tables with storage options, for instance, and pieces with sleek lines and minimal patterns for a timeless yet minimal look. Adding in unnecessary pieces is just as bad as adding bulky ones for a pared-back space.’ ![]() When sourcing pieces, always think of use and what your particular needs are, not what is typical for an entry. ‘When adding in storage, think slim – hooks for coats and bags, cubbies for shoes, perhaps a slim bench to sit on, or a thin cabinet to store it all. ‘No furniture should take up too much space that it crowds your walkway,’ begins Bonnie Tomlinson, professional organizer and author of Stop Buying Bins, available at Amazon. bulky, single-use furniture in favor of sleek multi-functional pieces that will make your entryway the first line of defense against a cluttered home. However, for a minimalist space, it is vital to avoid big. An entryway isn’t functional without good entryway furniture to perch on while you take off shoes or put bags down when you first come in. ![]() Recognized as one of the Boston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” for 13 consecutive years, Arbella is deeply committed to maintaining high levels of employee satisfaction and supporting a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Running this old Excel in PE is just a "joke", actually, and I found out by accident it fixes the XYPlorer issue, but running it must do "something" to fix the issue. Next issue for me is a bit of a strange one: If I run XYPlorer (which is 32bit only), I get an error ("-2147319780"), which I never have on a normal PESE. Compiled to the music of The Sweet.Success!! Especially of my kids, trying to capture how they grow up in front of my eyes. Not that I don't like how the Photos app presents my pictures, but the lack of obvious alternative for doing this on a Mac is still an issue. In addition, in the Apple/iOS case, the most frustrating thing for me is that the photos are hidden in some cryptic file structure, which can be edited only with the Apple's Photo app. The main point is not the price but the fact that my photos will be stored in the Cloud, which as we all know is a fancy word for someone else’s computers, with his terms of use and limitations. The first order of business was to turn on the security cameras and clean up the trash that was left on the table. The restrooms were unique because one of them said humans and the other said bots. The store had about three isles, an ATM machine, and also a restroom. Inside I saw that it was a pretty small store. I started to look around and noticed that I was behind the desk of the store counter. When I got to the store, Job bot greeted me and told me to always keep the customers that come in happy. I grabbed the convenience store one, put it in the simulator machine, and pulled the lever. When I got there, I saw the job cartridge tray again. Noticing that, I went back to the main menu. There was always a new assignment for me to do. Then I realized that my work in the office would never come to an end. The virtual boss gave me a name plate with my new rank on it. I continued to collect about five more assignment cards and followed their instructions. I went through the resumes in the drawer below my desk and hired two people. When I grabbed the next assignment card, it told me to do some hiring. From there, I logged in, checked all the emails and was ready for my next assignment. I looked around and found the password on a sticky note. Then I was stuck because it asked for a password. After plugging it in, I pressed the power button again and my computer came on. Then I realized that it wasn’t plugged in. When I tried to turn the computer on, I noticed that it had no power. It instructed me to check the emails on my computer. Job bot showed me where my assignment cards were, so I grabbed the first one. Now I was ready to officially start my first day on the job. While virtually eating the doughnuts and drinking my coffee, the sounds effects made me feel as if I did it in reality. I also grabbed two of the doughnuts and virtually ate them by putting them near my mouth. Once my fresh coffee was done, I drank it all up. Using the coffee maker was just like using an actual coffee maker. I grabbed my cup to make my coffee in the coffee maker on my desk. Out of nowhere, a floating table appeared with a few doughnuts and coffee cups. He told me that most humans start their day of work in the office off with a snack and a cup of coffee. On the wall were post-it notes, a clock, and a few humorous posters. I took a look at my workspace and noticed things like a telephone, stapler, computer, printer, a coffee maker, stacks of books and more. I heard continuous typing and the sounds of phones ringing constantly. Surrounding my desk space, I could see many other desks. Job bot escorted me to the desk, and I took my seat. I can even remember the humor in this lesson when he said: “You don’t want to get trapped in a virtual reality, now do you?”Īfter learning how to return, I traveled to a super detailed work office. He taught me how to return to the job simulator’s main menu where the cartridge tray and job machines were. In the midst of transitioning to the office job, Job bot told me before I left that he had something important to teach me. After making my decision, I put the cartridge in the simulator machine and pulled the lever. I looked through the jobs and decided to start with the office job. Then Job bot told me that it was time to go to work! Job bot then pulled out a tray of job cartridges for me to choose from. Using my virtual hands, I grabbed his card. I figured that I would be directed to a human from this point on. He said: “Hello human, why don’t you take my business card”. That’s when I realized that this job simulator was completely run by robots.Īfter listening to each description of the models, I turned back to Job bot. While listening to the descriptions, I noticed that they were being read in a robot voice. I pressed the button to each model and was told a small description about each. The four models were labeled stapler, office building, the commute and the businessman. Details like the built-in movie theater, the exhibit hall, the simulator hours screen, huge portraits on the walls, and four floating models that I could press a button. Then I started to notice a few more details. The place and scenery of the simulator was nothing short of amazing. ![]() There's also a setting that can auto-delete the source file after the conversion, and you can work with audio formats, too. I also appreciate the Device option when choosing a format so that I don't have to know what file type the device supports. A timer is at the bottom of the program that lets you choose what should happen when the conversions are finished, like exit the program or shut down the whole computer.Īnother thing I like are the per-video conversion settings so that each video can be saved to a different format even though all the converting is happening at the same time. The only thing I didn't like was the window that appeared after each video conversion, suggesting that I upgrade to enable more output formats. While testing the program, it seemed to convert quickly, and without any troubles. Some other things I like: built-in editor to add subtitles and adjust color, doubles as a video player for discs and ISO-formatted videos, lets you burn videos to a disc, and the editable program settings-they let you do things like convert multiple videos in bulk (up to 5), change default video/audio settings, and define a new default output folder for converted files.Īny Video Converter supports more input video formats than any other video converter program I've used. It is effectively their way to have an "integrated Linux virtual machine" inside of Windows. > rather than trying to fit Linux applications in Windows, they're running in their own world and providing integrations into this world. However, during college or early years, having a system that demands some amount of work to get it working has, atleast to me, be crucial in honing my skills. ![]() I haven't had any major trouble in a long time with it. I completely get the notion that when one is a professional he or she shouldn't need to meddle with system level quirks to get a productive environment and a desktop and thankfully, modern Linux is more or less there. ![]() It gave me an intimate comfort with Linux that I just don't have with any other system (including MacOS which I used for about 2.5 years). I had to read up about hardware, learn how to fix installation issues, sometimes recompile the kernel with different options (and hence study them) and a number of other things simply because it didn't "just work". skills to the fact that it was hard to get a Linux distribution running on a cheap PC. If the stack we care about is open-source and runs across many systems, then we still have the freedom.Ī tangential point but a relevant one nonetheless. > Most of us don't want to mess about with the desktop stack. I've found the Winaero blog to be a good source of tools to stop some of the Windows telemetry shenanigans. Granted plenty of companies do this now, for the same profit-driven motivations, but Microsoft goes above and beyond in terms of disabling or even ignoring opt out options. What annoys me most about Microsoft's overarching paternalistic philosophy is is how creepy their telemetry initiatives are. The worst experience for me was having to reformat after the update from Ubuntu 14.04 crashed. However, in fairness I would say that I've spent just as much or more time fixing rolling release issues on Arch/Manjaro, or troubleshooting the package stopping me from sudo apt upgrade. This is definitely a problem especially considering that the shotgun approach to some Windows updates actually hurt the performance of some machines, even breaking Windows on occasion. After using Linuxes for almost two decades now, the notion of the OS taking tens of minutes to self update when all I wanted was to quickly reboot it is unbearable. > The thing that annoys me most on Windows is Windows itself. WSL2 dynamically grows the amount of RAM allocated to the VM, which is quite clever, but I don't know how/if they're going to handle freeing memory again - here the NT kernel really needs to communicate with the Linux kernel.Īnyways, the upshot is that no, Microsoft is not going to take over the world, but perhaps it will be easier to use a Windows laptop which supports all the stupid Enterprise software I need but still have a Linux shell for actual work. This means you can now run Docker on WSL2 for instance, but it's also complicated: Kernels really like to think that they own the world, for instance they keep memory around to use for later. Including a Linux kernel is really the nuclear option: rather than trying to fit Linux applications in Windows, they're running in their own world and providing integrations into this world. The was that the NT kernel was still sufficiently different that the filesystem performance was quite poor and complex applications like Docker required more kernel features than was provided by just the syscall API. WSL1 did what the guys from Illumos and FreeBSD have also done: since the Linux syscall interface is quite stable, the NT kernel can simply implement these syscalls and handle them appropriately. No, Microsoft is not about to remove the NT kernel. The inclusion of a Linux kernel really seems to cause a lot of confusion. I find it fairly easy to work on both Mac OS X, Linux and WSL2 - but not pre-WSL Windows. If the stack we care about is open-source and runs across many systems, then we still have the freedom. This system wasn't as open-source as Linux, but it was good enough: Most of us don't want to mess about with the desktop stack. This really helped the Mac take off among hackers. In the mid 2000's the Mac really took off due to being a good-enough Linux replacement on the command line, while taking care of all the hardware integration and providing a sleek desktop experience. This is really Microsoft catching up to the Mac in terms of integration with the open-source ecosystem which importantly drives the web. ![]() We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us.Capcom 3 - 2010 Episode 1 Trailer.
